Were you ever asked the question, "If you can live in any time period what would it be?"  You might not be sure of your answer because you might not know what happened or what the people did during that time.  If I was ever asked that question, my answer would be during the Colonial American time period.  There were so many household jobs, ways of making money, and being part of America from the begginning.

For instance one man named Sammuel Dagget was a normal husband, with a normal New Englan life, family, job, and friends.  He made a living by growing all sorts of crops and he raised many kinds of animals.  Dagget would then sell or trade his crops and animals for the needs of his family.  On a farm you can grow wheat, corn, barley, oats, tobacco, and other crops.  Dagget made apple cider from his apples.  The animals that Dagget raised were cattle, sheep, pigs, and chickens.  The farm was his main job to help the family with the needs.  Some of his other jobs were what other colonial people did for a living.  Some other jobs that didn't have to deal with farming were "housewright" which means to bulid houses, making chairs, cofins, spinning a wheel, or pulling and putting false teeth in a person's mouth.

Everybody in the family had to help in one way or another to get food, clothing, and goods.  the children would learn how to do household chores especially the girls.  The women would prepare the food, spin yarn, make clothing from the yarn, and make towels and sheets.  Some women gave their children lessons on how to read and write.  they might also help out with the farm work.  The daughters might help the mother by preparing the yarn for her when she is going to make something, learn how to make clothes, soap, candles, take care of the garden, and prepare food.  If the family had a son he might help out with the chores in the house and as he would get older he would learn how to farm like his father or what the boy's father did.

When people weren't working they would get together.  Church is one place you would most likely see people.  Some other places to see people are when you're building a home with them, spinning yarn, or harvesting crops.  occasionally people would just meet for talking.  Even if you were a farmer and you had food, clothing, and shelter you didn't have everything you needed.  Back in Colonial America people traded or sold items they produced to get something as simple as an item for the kitchen or storage.

Since peopl in Colonial America didn't have TV's, they would figure out other ways to get news.  if the nearest paper was a couple of miles away, it might take a couple of days to get there and back.  there was always some kind of adventure the colonists had.  If they were going on a journey they might take a horse, oxen (epecially if they were to bring goods with them), or a two-wheel chaise.  If they didn'y have any of these sources of transportation then they can always ask a nieghbor to lend them a source of transportation so you can fulfill your journey.

When trying to decide on a time period to live in, the Colonial American Time Period is the best answer to choose because you can do so many things.  You were at the very beginning of American history.  You would learn how to work at home of on a farm.  You relied on your family to provide food, shelter, and clothing.  If your family went on a little trip of journey to get something you would experience the wilderness.  That is why the next time you get that question asked to you about which time period you would like to live in, yooou can tell the person the Colonial American time Period.
